Same Sex Marriage, Pros and Cons by Andrew Sullivan is an all-encompassing introduction to the subject of same sex marriage. The book covers all bases and hopefully will stimulate readers to investigate further into the available books for more in-depth information. Sullivan compiles "two thousands years" of discussion into a very readable and interesting anthology. The book was written in 1997 and is somewhat dated on feminist issues; however the basics of same sex marriage remain the same. Sullivan collects articles and essays on the history of same sex marriage from Plato to contemporary writers, Charles Krauthammer, William Safire, even Ann Landers, as well as Justices Scallia and Kennedy and other world cultural attitudes.
Other chapters cover the religious aspect from Protestant, Catholic and Jewish viewpoints. Legal issues and discussion of actual cases are also covered as are parenting concerns of same sex marriages or partnerships. The book is highly recommended for presenting both pro and con viewpoints and is a fine primer or introduction to same sex marriage.
